Britney Spears was born on December 2, 1981, in McComb, Mississippi, and raised in Kentwood, Louisiana as a Southern Baptist. Her parents are Lynne Irene a former elementary school teacher, and Jamie Parnell Spears, a building contractor. Spears's brother Bryan works as a manager for the Spears family interests and her sister Jamie Lynn is an actress and singer. Since an early age she has been enticed by the world of music and dance. In fact, she used to compete in state level competitions held for gymnasts at the age of 9 and was a regular at church choirs. Career in Movies With a series of talent and fair shows behind, Britney soon tried her luck at "The All New Mickey Mouse Club (1989 TV series) [1989-1994]"when she turned 8, she was however refused on the grounds of being too young. Instead, Britney, her mother and baby sister moved to New York where she starred in several TV adverts and an off broad-way play "Ruthless", as the under-study of Natalie Portman. 2 years later she again auditioned for a part in Mickey Mouse and this time won the part along with her present day counterparts Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake. She was with the show from 1993 to 1994, until she turned 13. Later, when the show ended, Spears returned to Kentwood and attended high school for a year. By the year 1997, she was associated with an all girl pop band Innocence and had already started distributing her music tapes to record companies like Sony and Mercury which rejected her initially. She was later signed on by Jives record company who released her first debut album in 1998 with the smash hit single “Hit me baby one more time” which whisked to number one position on all music charts including the Billboard Hot 100. As a matter of fact, Britney holds the record of selling 25 million copies of her debut album as a teenager which hasn’t been broken yet. The album also won her four Billboard Music Awards, including Female Artist of the Year. She took home the Favorite Pop/Rock New Artist award at the American Music Awards in 1999 and also received two nominations in the categories of Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 2000 Grammy Awards. < Her second album, "Oops!… I Did It Again”, in 2000   became a top ten hit in the U.S. and other countries and won her many awards respectively. The sales record for this album too was like the earlier one which elevated her to the top of success mantle. By this time, Britney’s personal life was gaining more popularity than her professional one. Her rollercoaster relationship with Justin Timberlake, her inclination towards extra exposure and use of animals in one of her performances and above all her claims to remain virgin till marriage were beginning to make teenage girls parents worried over the effect she was having on their children. Her third album, Britney came out in November 2001. Although not as successful as her previous albums, she assumed some creative control by co-writing five of the album's tracks. It surpassed Michael Jackson's album Invincible when it made a successful debut at number one in the U.S. by selling 745,744 units during its first week. The album's success made her the only female artist in music history to have her first three albums debut at number one. In November 2003, Spears released her fourth studio album, In the Zone, which further led the downfall of her career that started sloping down with her third album.This was the time when Britney got married to childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander in 2004 on a spree and shocked the world with annulling the marriage just after 55 hours. She later got engaged and later married to Kevin Federline, and geared up for her fifth studio album Blackout. November 2004 saw the release of her first greatest hits collection, Greatest Hits: My Prerogative. And she soon decided to take a career break to start a family. She took up tours around the world for the promotion of this record. And in November 2005, Spears released her first remix album, B in the Mix: the Remixes. Meanwhile, her personal life was going havoc with her filing for divorce in November, 2007 and the ugly turn in her children’s custody case. Her breakdown few months later compelled the court to hand in the custody of her children to her ex husband. Britney Joins Madonna

At Dodger Stadium last night in L.A., Britney Spears was reunited with Madonna (and Justin Timberlake, yes, the two did cross paths!) for her Sticky and Sweet tour. Greeting her with a kiss on the hand and a "Hi Britney," Madonna was joined onstage by Spears during her song "Human Nature." Spears looked great in black and white as she sang the last chorus of the song. And as for the reunion with Timblerlake, the two said a simple "hi" to each other.

April Showers Bring May Flowers: A Weekend In Review

Cate Blanchett welcomed her third son, Ignatius Martin, born Sunday.

Britney Spears was involved in a minor fender bender Saturday night on a L.A. freeway. No one was hurt. 

Stephanie Tanner (Jodie Sweetin) gave birth to a little girl, Zoie, Saturday. 

Lindsay Lohan is still partying, seen throughout the weekend at hot spots around L.A. with good friend DJ Samantha Ronson. 

Heidi Montag launches Heidiwood down the runway Friday. Spencer even presented her with two dozen pink roses! And they're still not living together. 

Nina Garcia is no longer with Elle magazine, which may mean she's out at Project Runway. Oh no!

Still no wedding confirmation from newlyweds Beyonce and Jay-Z, hiding her ring finger from the public at a Houston Rockets game Friday night.

Britney's TV Gig

First slightly-secretive weekend meetings with Mel Gibson and now an acting gig over at CBS.

Britney has been very busy lately, but in a good way I suppose.

PEOPLE has just released the first video promo of Brit in action where she plays a receptionist at a dermatologist's office in the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Shown opposite Neil Patrick Harris in the clip, her first words are, well why don't you just see for yourself...

Sam Lutfi Has Been Served

Britney’s pal has been served with a restraining order. He has to remain at least 250 yards from Spears, her home, and her family’s homes. The document, filed by Spears’s father Jamie, claims “Mr. Lutfi has drugged Britney. He has cut Britney’s home phone lines and removed her cell phone chargers. He claims to control everything.”

Britney A Teacher?

Recently spotted back at the Millenium Dance Complex, Britney Spears spent a part of her Monday teaching a dance class for six children ranging in age from 4-7. Dressed (appropriately?) in ripped fishnets and red boy shorts, Spears taught choreographed routines to Madonna's "Holiday" and "Material Girl" as well as letting her pupils do a little free style dancing. "She even played age-appropriate games in a circle, pretending to be a choo-choo train," Robert Baker, director of Millenium, told People.

Apparently Spears had so much fun, she asked to teach another class.

Baker added, "Britney was just amazing with the kids and everyone ended up having a blast. At the end of the hour class, all the kids hugged Britney and she seemed very happy."

Britney's Dad Gets Legal Control

Britney's father, Jamie Spears, has attained legal control over his daughter's affairs. This means that Jamie can have control over hospital visitors, and can keep Britney's friend Sam Lutfi from seeing Britney. The court has also agreed that Jamie Spears has the right to request restaining orders on behalf of his daughter.

While Jamie Spears will get temporary authority over Spears's money and home, this decision does not give him further authority or power when it comes to Britney's psychiatric care at UCLA Hospital.

Lufti in response to the agreement said "I object to this. Britney is fully capable of handling her own finances ... Her doctors are capable of handling her heath care. You think in a time like this, the family would be at the hospital taking care of their daughter, rather than fighting for her money. How sad."

Britney Hospitalized Again

Britney Spears was placed under psychiatric hold earlier this month ...

Britney Spears was hospitalized again early this morning and is currently under psychiatric hold. A source told People magazine that she was escorted by police. Spears was brought to UCLA Medical Center for a 72-hour lock-down and evaluation. Pal Sam Lufti told People "She went willingly. It was like something in her heart was telling her she should go. She knew something was wrong."

A source says that Britney was hospitalized because she was "driving around her neighboorhood like a mad-woman ... Britney has been prescribed medication which she retuses to take." Reports that Spears attempted suicide have been rebuffed by Lutfi and friend Alli Sims.

More weird Britney behavior

Britney Spears is no stranger to odd antics, but her behavior on January 7 was particularly bizarre. The “scantily clad” pop star showed up at a Beverly Hills elementary school, saying she was there to pick up someone else’s kids. (She lost custody of her own sons January 4 after being rushed to the hospital. She blew off a custody hearing yesterday.) The singer parked her car outside the school just before 3 p.m. and spent 10 minutes smoking cigarettes and talking to herself while she waited for classes to let out. “She was just rambling and confused,” says the witness, who approached Spears to ask if she was OK. “She said, ‘I’m here to pick up my kids.’ But then she changed her story and said, ‘They aren’t my kids; I have a new attorney, and I came to pick them up for her.’” Adds the witness, “All I could think was, Who in their right mind would let her pick up their kids?” As children began to leave for the day, the star, 26, caused a commotion — “It became the talk of the school. Some of the kids were freaked out,” says a school source. She was directed to a more secure entrance around back. But before getting into her car and driving off (without any children), she chatted up the female witness: “She said, ‘You’re so nice. You should give me your number. I don’t have very many friends.’"
